In 1894, Emperor Menelik II introduced telecommunications services in Ethiopia. This was when construction began on the telephone line linking Harar with Addis Ababa. From the capital, the interurban network expanded satisfactorily. The lines connected many important centres of the Empire, facilitating communication long distance with operators or assistants at intermediate stations. They often acted as repeaters for distant call parties.The Ethiopian government, following the five-year 2005/06-2009/10 plan, has shifted its focus to education, health, and agriculture. It now wants to improve telecommunications services as it considers them a crucial lever for the country's development. Ethio Telekom was founded on 29th November 2010 from the ambition to support steady growth in our country. It is part of the Growth and Transformation Plan, which has ambitious goals for 2015. Ethiopia's government considers the telecommunication infrastructure as an important lever for the country's development and has made a decision to upgrade it to a world-class standard. ethio Telekom was created from the desire to make a significant shift in the way the telecom sector is developed to help support our steady growth.
